Things I actually did/said.
A quick rundown on why I have no friends at school:
1. My partner for the food demo project suggested we do quinoa.
2. I wanted to do lard, as you may recall. He said, “What could you even make with lard?” and I was like, “PIE.” It is the word to end all words.
3. He suggested our target audience should be vegetarians in need of a good source of protein with a complete set of essential amino acids…
4. …I suggested our target audience should be biodome experiment subjects on the verge of rioting because they have nothing to eat but quinoa.
5. And that we should ferment the quinoa into an alcoholic beverage in an effort to pacify them.
So…I’ll be in the kitchen tonight, making chicha. I’ll let you know what happens.
I guess I should explain that the biodome thing was not a completely random idea of mine. Quinoa has been identified by NASA as a good candidate crop for Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems because of its high protein content, among other things. I found that out by reading Wikipedia, believe it or not. Sometimes the slacker’s way out yields results.
Damn, I wish I were that quick on my feet! That’s totally brilliant!
Woot!!! You are a rockstar!!!
Though, actually, I like quinoa. Good luck with the fermenting!
You rock in so very many ways… PIE!!!
Pie is a beautiful word.
Liz, I have never in my life eaten quinoa. I’m glad you like it, because I’m terrified!
Though when I boiled it last night and it exploded into tiny fluffy spirals, I was pretty pleased with myself.
Quinoa was on my list of “core foods” when I was doing WW. That meant I could eat as much quinoa as I needed “in order to feel full”. (They were very big on clarifying that “as much as you want” is not the same as “as much as you need in order to feel full”.)
Suffice it to say that as much quinoa as I want is MUCH less than it takes to feel full.
(And I was going to make cookies this afternoon, but now I have to wonder– would I rather have pie? Today is a very good day for pie.)
I like quinoa too, but in a smackdown between quinoa and pie, pie wins.
I don’t think I’ve ever eaten quinoa. The hubby and I are vegetarian, but we’re bad vegetarians. We don’t eat tofu, seitan, tempeh or any of the cool hip veggie foods nor do we even know how to cook any of the above.
that’s awesome!
OK I am definitely a super big fan of quinoa. It is FASCINATING to me how you cook it and all those little grains pop open and those little curly cues pop out. Also the curly cue things always reminded me of pubes, which makes is a little disturbing to eat, but I just have to keep reminding myself that it’s actually a super-grain or whatever.
And I’ve got news for you about quinoa alcohol. SOMEONE’S ALREADY BEAT YOU TO IT!!!

They’ve got all these displays up at our local ghetto liquor store about this stuff. I have no idea why a crappy southside Chicago liquor store would be into quinoa vodka, but apparently they are. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m definitely curious. Does the vodka contain all the protein that’s in actual quinoa??? Can I get protein from drinking ALCOHOL????? These are the questions that keep me up at night.
hahahahahahahaha! Poor dear. Now you’re going to have to bring Quinoa cocktails to the next journal club meeting.
LEO, I have to say, I would make quinoa vodka if I had the facilities for distilling. But no, it wouldn’t have the protein in it — distilling would remove all that, and also explains why it’s so sparkly clear. What I’m making is going to be more like sludgy beer. That is a REALLY hilarious discovery though — I would try it.
Could you imagine if it DID have the protein in it? You could survive off an 80 proof beverage. I’m not sure if that’s a description of heaven or hell.
Paul — We need QUINOA PIE. I bet you could make it into a pie somehow, at least into the crust. With lard!
Mrs. Millur — your mention of using quinoa to as one of those ‘unlimited’ foods to fill up on made me sad. Damn, those were the days, eh? I remember once eating a bun with lettuce and mustard only — no hamburger — because I was “out” of calories for the day. It was hideous, and I remember at the time thinking, “Okay, this is not right. Why am I doing this again?”
Dee — I have a funny feeling it’s going to be so disgusting, I would never subject you or the rest of our lovely lady-friends to quinoa chicha. But if, against all odds, it turns out to be really tasty, I promise to bring some.
Rachel — I’ve never tried ANY of those things you mentioned (okay except tofu)! I am a baaaad nutrition student. I’ll try anything, just about…I just never get around to anything that sounds boring, and most vegetarian meat substitutes sound boring to me. Come to think of it, though, I’ve probably tried some of them without realizing it in various curries and things.
I like quinoa, though I’ve never attempted cooking it myself–there was a wrap place in Toronto that used quinoa in practically everything, so that’s where I discovered it. And the escaping curlicues factor really doesn’t make it sound like something I would WANT to cook.
More importantly, though, this post is hilarious, and I am so bummed you’re not doing lard.
I am a little bummed too — mostly because I actually know my way around making a pie, or anything else pastry-like that might involve lard, and I’m going to feel like a bumbling idiot making this quinoa dish. Ah well :/
